Stress Tip #209: Meditation for the World
Meditation is gaining attention but is frequently misunderstood. Physically, meditation is usually practiced by sitting still and, in many cases, focusing on something specific, such as an image, body sensation, or sound. The intention is not to “stare at your navel” but to calm the mind to gain clarity and equanimity so that we can more readily choose skillful actions. These actions bring compassion, benevolence, and sympathetic joy to the world, which in turn generate more skillful actions, producing a positive feedback loop. In this sense, meditation is a practice for developing a healthy sense of community, influencing the emergence of the kind of world we want to live in. Let’s try it ourselves, sitting still for several minutes each day and noticing over the long term what kind of ripples we are sending out.
